Father Martin Silverudd created the first Fifty Five Flowery Hen in 1955 (hence the name), who also created the Isbar. This breed has proven itself to be his most successful creation. His goal was to create an autosexing breed that produces eggs for the table in commercial quantities. With the use of various types of leghorns Silverudd created cockerels that look very different than the hen throughout its life.
As a day-old chick the males are easy to distinguish by the blonde down on the backs of their heads. As adults the males are largely white while the females have a beautiful spotted pattern; the ‘flowers’ that contribute to the breed name.
This rare breed is possibly the best egg-layer of any homestead chicken breed. The hens are truly productive layers, and the eggs are the largest of any of the breed we maintain. These medium-sized hens lay a vast amount of XL white eggs and average well in excess of 250 eggs per year. There is no better chicken to own if producing eggs for breakfast is your goal!
